Day 11 - and Day 12

On Wednesday, just as we thought we were getting the hang of being parents, having found a set of daily routines that seemed to be working, our three-year-old turned everything upside down and made us all start from scratch.

He wouldn't eat anything for lunch, but this we were already used to. So one of us just stayed at the restaurant (and took some food back to our room later), while the other one went to put him to bed for a siesta. But this time he got furious that one of us got to stay in the restaurant without him. He was screaming and kicking and slamming doors and shoving the furniture around, quite hysterical. Holding him didn't help. He couldn't say what he wanted, and perhaps this was the real reason for his frustration: we don't understand (most of) the things we say to each other.

He finally fell asleep, but woke up again shortly after, and continued to scream and run around the bedroom for almost two hours. The whole time we were both sitting on the bed trying to get him to calm down, to no avail. Finally he collapsed on the bed, exhausted, and cried himself to sleep.

More or less the same thing happened after supper. He cried for two and a half hours after putting on his pyjamas before he fell asleep. It was excruciating to watch his anger and frustration, not knowing what we could do to make him feel better. In the end we just lay down and held him between us on the bed. Loosely enough that he could turn around (and he twists like a worm), but firmly enough so he couldn't get up. He cried so our hearts were aching, but after about 10-15 minutes of this he fell asleep.

We apologize to our faithful readers for not writing a blog entry yesterday, but we were too exhausted ourselves!

Today we discovered a good grocery store near the hotel, so now we don't have to go all the way to the mall to buy everyday items or snacks for us or the kid. (BTW, we haven't decided on a Norwegian name for "the kid" yet — that is why we don't use his name here yet.)

Papi bought himself some comic books, and the youngster got balloons and a fantastic snack called manjar blanco. We have to get another one of those for the flight home! He sits still and eats it with both hands (spoon in one, manjar in the other), and the thing will last for hours! We let him have the manjar when we put him to bed for his siesta after a dip in the swimming pool today (we're more or less letting him have anything he wants today, rethinking all our routines to avoid another day like yesterday), and he fell asleep with the spoon in his mouth. Definitely no crying before nor after the siesta today!

After lunch we went to the zoo. Its reputation is deserved: The Zoológico de Cali is great. I have to agree with our Lonely Planet guide to Colombia: If you were a caged animal, this is where you'd want to be. All the animals we saw, looked really healthy and content. And the range of species is really impressive. But for a three-year-old the most interesting part was the strollers shaped like little cars with steering wheels, which one could rent at the entrance. We'd like to go back next week (we couldn't cover the whole zoo in only two hours), but he'll be very bored unless someone pushes him around in a car all the time without pausing long to look at animals.
